Probably derived from the French surname d'Orival, which literally means "from Orival". In France, there are three communes that are named Orival, some of which had their name spelled Aureval or Aurival in older times (as a result, the surnames d'Aureval and d'Aurival also exist). All three communes ultimately derive their name from Latin aurea vallis meaning "golden vale" or "golden valley". Known bearers of Dorival as a first name include the Brazilian singer-songwriter Dorival Caymmi (1914-2008) and former Brazilian soccer player Dorival Júnior (b. 1962).
