The oldest dwarf in the works of Tolkien. A line of dwarf kings bore this name.

Tolkien took the name from the Dvergatal "Catalogue of Dwarves" in the Völuspá, a part of the Poetic Edda.

Meaning & History

Durin is the name of the second created Dwarf after Mótsognir in Norse Mythology. Found in multiple pieces of Old Norse poetry, the most notable being the Völuspá (also spelled, Vǫluspǫ).

Also a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's mythical world, Middle Earth, Durin was the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves. The Dwarves are often referred to as The Children of Durin.
