Meaning & History

Latinized form of the Greek name Epeigmenios, which is derived from the Greek adjective ἠπειγμένως (epeigmenos) or επειγόμενος (epeigomenos) meaning "hurried, rushed". Also compare the related Greek words ἐπείγω (epeigo) meaning "to press by weight" and ἔπειξις (epeixis) meaning "hurry, haste" and ἀπεπείγομαι (apepeigomai) meaning "to hasten away" and ἐσσύμενος (essymenos) meaning "hurrying, eager, impetuous".

One should not confuse this name with the similar-looking Greek name Epimenes.

This name is best known for being the name of the 4th-century saint Epigmenius of Rome, who was martyred during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian (died in 311 AD). Some sources suggest that he may possibly be the same person as saint Pigmenius of Rome (second half of the 4th century AD).
