Derived from the Greek adjective ἐρατός (eratos) meaning "lovely, beloved" (see Erato) combined with the Greek noun σθένος (sthenos) meaning "vigour, strength".A notable bearer of this name was the Greek scientist Eratosthenes of Cyrene (3rd century BC), who was the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth.
