Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective ἐρατός (eratos) meaning "lovely, beloved" (see Erato) combined with the Greek noun σθένος (sthenos) meaning "vigour, strength".

A notable bearer of this name was the Greek scientist Eratosthenes of Cyrene (3rd century BC), who was the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth.
