This is my little brother's name (he was born in 2004, it's the *fifth* most popular name that year, and it was supposed to be Owen or Emmet anyway, grr). We went to the library for a kids' story time, and 4 of the 5 boys there were named Ethan.
Nobody calls him by his name, anyway, though. His mom calls him Junior and I call him E.T. or Andy. I guess kids with common names have to forge their own characters instead of living up to their names?
Not a bad name but I have no idea why it's so become so popular. It's rather lispy sounding in my opinion.

This name has really grown on me. It is very masculine sounding and makes me think of a smart man.

Ethan Rayne was a character on the TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". He first appeared in the season two episode "Halloween". He is a British chaos-worshiping sorcerer who creates all sorts of havoc.
I really like this name! Since it has the meaning of Solid and Enduring, Strong and Firm that's what the name makes me think of. I think it's a wonderful name!
I quite like this name. It has a very soft, sensitive sound, which gives it a great masculine quality. It's meaning is also appealing to me. It makes me think of a really nice guy who is honest and loyal. It is a bit of a shame that it's gotten so popular over the years, but that still doesn't deter me from liking it. I never tire of hearing mothers calling for their young sons named Ethan!
Oh, good Lord, don't name your boy Ethan, whatever you do! It's horrible! It sounds fey and frou frou beyond belief. If you want your son to get beat up at school and end up working in a women's hair salon, then name him Ethan.
My son's name. When he was born (1995) it was not particularly in fashion, about #50. People would often mistake his name for Ian, Nathan or Steven. Now it's everywhere. I think it sounds masculine, not wispy. He likes his name fairly well, though when he was younger he wanted to be called Christopher or Nicholas.
I love this name. It was the only name my husband and I could agree on for our son who was born 2006. It was the 4th most popular last year, but if you look at what percentage of boys were named Ethan compared to 2005 and 2004 for instance, it's actually a smaller percent. Starting 2001 if I remember correctly, over 1% of boys born in those years were named Ethan. In 2006 it was 0.94%.

I think Ethan has a great ring to it, I also think it sounds strong like its meaning. I think it is a great name.
This name is sooo annoying. It sounds like you're whining when you say it. This name along with Jack, Aidan, and Liam are the most annoying names I've ever heard of.
I used to love the name Ethan, before it got very popular again. I like that strong long vowel sound followed by the soft "th" phoneme. Now I am tired of hearing the name Ethan on little boys. I would be intrigued if I met a grown man with the name, though.
I usually dislike names with the ''th'' sound, and I hate the names Keith and Heath, but Ethan sounds very pleasant to me. I would never use a Biblcal name, and the name is hideously common and popular, but like Aidan, Connor, and Tristan, this is one of the GOOD popular names in America right now.
I really like the name Ethan. It's a nice, masculine name, and it's not too 'out there' (though I sometimes prefer the odd names). I've seen it spelled 'Ethyn'. To each their own, I guess.
Ethan has been my ultimate favorite boy's name for the last 5 years or so. I've still got a while until I even want to think about children, but I'm convinced this will be my future son's name. It's everything I want in a boy's name, it's strong yet gentle, intellectual, but not too pretentious, and it's traditional but not too common (up until recently which makes me very upset). I do agree that it sounds a little bit whiny as child's name, but as both a teenager's name and a man's name, I think it's gorgeous. I find it goes really well with a lot of different middle names too.
This name reminds me of Ethan on the soap opera 'One Life to Live'. He's cute, maybe that's why it's getting to be a popular name. Sounds elitist, wealthy and privileged. Although I do like the name a lot.
I agree, really great name but becoming so overused. :(

I love this name, and I always will. It doesn't matter if everyone in the world was named Ethan. If you like the name like I do that's what is the important thing.

Something happened in the 1990's that made this name more popular.
I really like this name a lot! Glad it's in its "reign". By "reign", I mean that the name stayed popular for several years. It might last until a few more years, when I assume the popularity will fall.
Ever since Ethan appeared as the cold-blooded "Other" on LOST, whenever I hear the the name I think of someone evil and conniving. Losties would refrain from using this name.
To be blatantly honest: I cannot stand the name. It has the air of something that very artsy parents would choose... an observation that I do not think is half off (but as always, there are the odd exceptions). Do I necessarily hate the ones who bear it? Negative-- don't be silly. I simply find it... an unattractive, unusable, tacky name.
And for the record-- that opinion is based off of my US American ears at the general public who bears it, and sound... Perhaps if you are Hebrew, it may work.
It would be a pretty decent name if it wasn't so insanely popular. Name your son Ethan nowadays, and I can guaranty you he'll meet at least two other boys with his name.
Makes me think of 'Ethan Frome.' It's okay, but the character is a bit of a wuss.

I used to really like this name: Cute on a boy, intelligent on an adolescent, mysterious on an adult, and it remains quite handsome throughout the years. Now I don't know what to think. I read Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, and though it was very well written I despised Ethan's character. He was stupid and wrong in so many ways. So now this name has been tainted by that association. I really ought to get over myself, though. It's such a good name.
Ethan is an OK name, nothing I would use. It sounds to boring and it's too common! It also hardly goes with a middle name. If you like "AN" ending boys names use Evan, not Ethan.
