I'm a little surprised no one's mentioned Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan from "The Help", a book by Kathryn Stockett. She's a wonderful bundle of contradictions - she's a 23-year-old white woman in the early 1960s South with a cotton trust fund and a college degree, she lives at home on her family's cotton plantation (Longleaf), and she devotes herself, at considerable risk, to a book featuring the real stories of the black women who work for the white families in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. Emma Stone plays her in the 2011 film based on this amazing book. I highly recommend it!
