I believe -- that is, I have been told by a few Scandinavian etymologists -- that the name originates from the two Norse words "auja" (gifted) and "winduR" (conqueror).Norse names were composed in this way, often with an adjective followed by a profession or occupation or similar describer. "auja-winduR" would be one such name, by the sounds of it relatively popular. The capitalized "R" denotes the noun as meaning a person doing whatever the verb form of the word is.While I cannot guarantee the accuracy of this information, it is the information I have been given regarding my name.
