There is a cave called Fingal's Cave on Staffa island, which is one of the Hebrides islands off the coast of Scotland. This cave was named after Macpherson's hero. Composer Felix Mendelssohn composed an overture known as Fingal's Cave overture, or Hebrides Overture, based on the strange echoes inside the cave. It is pretty marvelous. Also this is a really cool name.
Fingal was one of the middle names of the acclaimed Irish poet Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). His full name was Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde.
In the Mistmantle Chronicles, one of the characters is an otter named Fingal. He is the younger brother of Padra (a captain living on Mistmantle Island) and very goofy, as all otters are. I thusly associate this name with silly otters.
