VOLTAIRE (1694-1778), the French philosopher, writer and historian of the Enlightenment famous for his wit and his critical stand against religion, was born François-Marie Arouet. "Voltaire" was only one of his 178 pen names and he finally kept it as his regular 'nom de plume' after his imprisonment in the Bastille in 1718.
