Meaning & History

From classical adjective 太し (futoshi) meaning "fat, thick; daring, shameless."
Alternatively, it can be used as 大 (dai, tai, oo.kii, futo) meaning "big, large," related to the adjective. They can also be combined with a shi kanji, like 志 meaning "will, aim, goal," 士 meaning "samurai" or 四 meaning "four."
