I have a sister who used to work for a children's charity organization in the Philippines. She told me that this is a very popular name over there. I was kinda surprised as I couldn't imagine it being so.

It's not only biblical, it features in Islamic traditions also. People fail to see the similarities between the two religions! Both the religions have the same prophets with different names, there is also a lot in the Qu'ran (to my belief) about Mary, but called Mariam (feel free to correct me). As for Gabriel, it is trendy and I feel it gets old fast. But it's a decent name, though overused. Check the popularity charts.
