Latinized form of the Greek name Γελάσιος (Gelasios), which is derived from Greek γέλασις (gelasis) "laughing", from the verb γελασείω (gelaseiô) "to be ready to laugh". This name was borne by two popes. In Ireland, it has historically been used as a Latinized form of Glaisne.
