Meaning & History

Italian diminutive of Gerarda, as -ina is an Italian feminine diminutive suffix.

In the Dutch-speaking world, the name is regarded as one of the many variants of Gerarda. It is an independent name and not regarded or used as a diminutive. It probably originated in the Middle Ages under the influence of Medieval Latin, when most of Belgium and all of the Netherlands were part of the Holy Roman Empire. Also compare Gerardinus.

A known bearer of this name is the Italian singer-songwriter Gerardina Trovato (b. 1967).
