From Japanese 秀 (hide) "esteem, excellence" combined with 良 (yoshi) "good" or 吉 (yoshi) "good luck". Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Hideyoshi 秀吉 being his given name) was a 16th-century daimyo who unified Japan and attempted to conquer Korea. He also banned the ownership of weapons by the peasantry, and banished Christian missionaries.
