The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary was made an official Catholic doctrine in 1854, and was further confirmed through the visions of Lourdes, when the Blessed Virgin confirmed herself to be "the Immaculate Conception". The idea states at its core that Mary, from conception in her mother's womb, was uniquely pure, holy, and blessed above all else.
