Norwegian adoption of an originally German short form of Old High German names containing the element isarn meaning "iron" (e.g., Isengard, Iselinde, Isburg), as well as an adoption of an obsolete German diminutive of Isa and a Norwegian adoption and adaption of the Irish name Aisling (compare Isleen).
