Jasper is such, a cool, fresh, uncommon name! I like it - for a girl or boy. It reminds me of the name Juniper. Lol, Jasper and Juniper - now there's a unique sibset!
Hhhhmmmm. Not sure what to think of this name. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. It's a nice name for an old man, but I can't see a toddler or a teenager named Jasper. Of course, all those old men named Jasper were young at some point.
As it is, this name is most certainly not feminine, and I urge any who would name a daughter this to reconsider or to add a feminine diminutive suffix if necessary. I believe that Crystal, Sapphire, or Pearl are better gemstone names for girls.
This name makes me think of mean, bigoted hillbillies. It also brings to my mind a very annoying Finnish celebrity named Jasper who is always whining about how much he hates being famous. Nothing but bad associations, sorry.
I am surprised that some people have commented about this being used for a girl, as Jasper is one of the MOST MASCULINE names I know. I like the name Jasper, but I much prefer the German form, Kaspar.

I, being a child of the 90s, tend think of Chuck E. Cheese whenever I hear this name because it was the name of that dog character there. Once I get past that, though, I kind of like it. I would probably use it as a middle name, though.
Jasper is the name of Brian's gay cousin on Family Guy. He has a Portuguese boyfriend named Ricardo.

While this name may not look so nice on paper, the sound of Jasper is one of the most beautiful. I especially like the fact that it belongs to not only one of the 3 Wise men, but also to Jasper Cullen in the Twilight series. Another plus is that it means "treasure." I would consider naming a child this.
The Book of Revelation gives Jasper as the cornerstone of New Jerusalem, whose walls are said to be made of the stone. The Jasper on the ephod of Aaron has been traditionally thought to represent the tribe of Benjamin.

This name is so adorable! Not in a childish way, but Jasper is such a great name! I always think of the stone Dalmation Jasper when I see this name.
I saw a poster a while ago with the face of a missing child named Skyla Jasper. I can't remember her last name, but her first two stick in my head. My sympathies go out to her family.
I immediately think of Caspar the Friendly Ghost and Jasper Cullen when I hear this name. I have a hard time identifying the name "Jasper" with a human.

I really like the name Jasper. But for some reason (and this may sound weird, I apologize if it does), I can't picture a man named Jasper who *doesn't* have an English accent. Seriously--well, to me anyway, since I'm American--this is such a quintessentially English name.

As a name, it derives from Gaspar, which derives from an ancient Chaldean word, "Gizbar", meaning "treasurer".
As a stone, it derives from Greek "iaspis", a green spotted stone, probably derived from a Semitic language, possibly Hebrew "yashpheh", meaning "to polish".
Jasper is a character in "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula LeGuin. Jasper is the rival of the main character, Ged and enjoys making Ged look foolish.
Jasper is also an old country name for a wasp in England.
Despite the fact authors often choose the name Jasper for their minor villains (maybe because of the wasp thing), I think this name is really gorgeous.
Personally I can't see this name on anyone who is not English. (And I'm American.) For some reason (in my mind), this name coincides with an English accent.
I really like this name. It makes me think of a tall, blonde guy who is quiet but loyal and peaceful. Twilight is probably the reason I like it so much.
Jasper is a very cool name for a boy born in this decade. A lot of "J" names sound really good on guys and this one has a really nice, kinda quirky but hip sound to it. I have thought about naming a son this but not quite sure how his name would be received by the general public (I'm in the U.S.) as I think many people still think of this name as too old-fashioned sounding. Anyway, I think it is time for Jasper to be reborn and maybe it is starting to be. It's been increasing in popularity each year, at #337 in 2009.

I'd like to correct the name's official description. The three "wise men" were not likely to have been kings. It's far more likely that they were followers of Zoroaster, hence the term magi being associated with them. (Magi were adept at reading the stars, which is probably why they were led by a star to Jesus even in the more popular versions.) Since I'd hazard a guess that most people have not heard of Zoroastrianism these days, the meaning's been lost in favor of the "three kings at manger-side" portrayal, not that it's been helped any by carols or nativity scenes that depict the "wise men".
Handsome and sophisticated; I love this name, but one namesake irks me.
Jasper from 101 Dalmations, I don't mind. Jasper Carrot the TV presenter, I don't mind. Jasper one of the wise men, I don't mind [I'm an atheist]. Jasper Hale, I DO mind.
I really like the name Jasper; it sounds eccentric and unique. I hope it'll be used more often in the future too as it sounds unusual and yet not too unusual to be heard on a person. Also, I think it would suit any age, and reminds me of somebody with character and personality. :-)
