My interpretation of Jerald or Gerald stems from the pronunciation of the letters j and g as "h". It would then be pronounced Herald. Since many names have biblical origins the harking of the herald angels in the Christmas carol came to mind. This etymology seems more straightforward than using the name Harold as the source.

The name Jerald was given to 50 baby boys born in the US in 2012.

This is the way my father spells it. I think it's better than Gerold/Gerald/Jerold.
