User comments for Jolene (Meaning / History Only)

Actually this is my name and I have recently been trying to find out its meaning. From what I have found it seems to have originated from the Bible and the name JOSEPH, which is my fathers name, and it is said to mean God shall add and she who shall increase.

Other than the biblical definition, Jolene has also been derived from the French word "jolie", which means pretty.

Jolene is a modern creation and has nothing to do with the Bible. (says the agnostic - but anyway it is pretty, but stop getting these ideas that EVERY name is religious!)

As pertaining to the last comment, Jolene is fairly modern or maybe it has existed prior but there were not as many records. But Jolene does seem to have originated from Joe or Joseph. Since Jo comes from Joseph or Josephine. Joseph is from the bible so that's probably where they're getting it from. And I like this name but I don't like names that end with lene or een.

It's a relatively new name, I don't think it existed prior to the 20th century and it's definitely not Biblical. It's origins ARE probably with Joseph and its variants, but names DERIVED from Biblical names are not Biblical in themselves.

It can be used as a form of "Josephine."

My name is Jolene too! I thought I was the only one with the Jolene name. Now I feel better I'm not the only one people sing it to! ^_^

My name is Jolene too! I thought I was the only one with this name until I met a lady that I worked with, she also had this name. Some of y'all are rather cruel by saying ugly stuff about our name. I actually like my name and think it's pretty. My hair is brown and my eyes are sea blue but I haven't stolen anyone's man. Lol! Btw... I like Dolly Parton too!
