User comments for Jouko
Behind the names Jouko and the heroic Joukahainen of the Kalevala is an adjective jouka which means strong. The word jouka is no more used or understood by Finns, but the Estonians still use it. In the Kalevala the young "strongling" Joukahainen, using raw physical power, clearly loses the battle against old, half-blind, white bearded Väinämöinen who possesses the greatest wisdom of the heroes of the Kalevala. A very central idea in the epos is the superiority of spirit over physics.
The name comes from the brave wise man in the Finnish epic Kalevala.
