Meaning & History

This name can be used as a single kanji, 柏 (haku, hyaku, byaku, kashiwa) meaning "oak," or it can be combined with 可 (ka, koku, -be.ki, -be.shi) meaning "can, passable, possible," 士 (shi) meaning "gentleman, samurai" and 和 (o, ka, wa, nago.mu, yawa.ragu) meaning "harmony, Japanese style, peace, soften."

Bearers of this name include Kashiwa Ōyama (大山 柏), son of prominent (female) social figure Sutematsu Ōyama (1889-1969) and, in more recent times, creative director, art director and graphic designer Kashiwa Satō (佐藤 可士和) (1965-).

This name is rarely given to boys, if given at all.

As 柏, it is also used as a surname (see Kashiwa) and a place name (see Kashiwa).
