Meaning uncertain. One source states that the name is derived from Proto-Bulgarian krum meaning "rock", whilst another source states that the name is ultimately of Iranian origin but declines to provide its meaning.This name was most notably borne by a Bulgarian khan (ruler) from the early 9th century AD, who defeated the Byzantine emperor Nikephoros in battle. Tradition holds that Krum lined the emperor's skull with silver and used it as a drinking cup.
