Meaning & History

Lado is a recurring word in Slavic folk songs celebrating the summer solstice. It's meaning is unknown. The use of the word in the songs convinced 16th century scholars that Lado was a god of love. This interpretation is disputed by many modern scholars; they believe lado was simply an exclamation. Regardless, the deity has entered the neo-pagan Slavic pantheon in the feminine form, Lada.
