Italian name from the Latin word Lares (demi-deities/localised spirits ie Lares Familiares, Lares Compitales, Lares Viales, Lares Permarini, Lares Praestites).
Lara Croft, arguably the most popular video game character ever created, appears in over nine Tomb Raider games, two movies (played by Angelina Jolie) and also has her own comic book. The fictional British archaeologist/antiquarian rose to fame after the first "Tomb Raider" video game was released in 1996.
This is one of my favourite names for a girl. It's beautiful sounding, utterly feminine without being frilly and refreshingly underused in this day and age of Emma, Isabella, Madison, Olivia, Hannah, etc.

I love this name for a girl. It's very feminine and uncommon but not obscure. Just beautiful.
Lara is the girl in the German book and movie "Beyond Silence" (Jenseits der Stille). Her parents are deaf, so she have to speak for them. Lara gets interested in music and that causes problems.
I think it is pronounced La-ruh as that's how a girl I know pronounces it. But she has an 'h' on the end of hers so I don't know if that makes a difference.
My name is Lara and is pronounced Lair-a. I see the name rather frequently, but rarely pronounced the same. My dad's name is Larry and my mom's fave movie was Dr. Zhivago, which is why they chose it. I used to hate it, but now I love its uniqueness. I get a lot of compliments on it.
Its actual origin is from Latin. In Roman mythology, Lara was the daughter of the river god Almo, and the wife of Mercurius (the Roman version of Hermes). Their children, the Lares, were the domestic/household gods that inhabited all Roman homes.
Lara was the heroine in Boris Pasternak's novel "Doctor Zhivago".
Famous bearer: actress Lara Flynn Boyle (b. 1970).
