From the Swedish word lilla "little" combined with the popular name suffix vi, found in such names as Alvi, Åsvi, Hillevi, Kjellvi and Torvi. The second element is often regarded as a derivative of Old Norse vé "devoted, dedicated", and the name has been interpreted to mean "little devoted one". It has been in use only since the 20th century.
