To the previous poster, Malone is not pronounced Muh-low-nee. You're thinking of the Italian surname Milone which can be pronounced the same as Malone when anglicized or as Muh-low-nay in Italy. Milone comes from the personal name Milo which has a different etymology from Malone. Maloney is most likely from Milone and not related to the etymology of Malone.
I can't imagine this as a first name. It also sounds a bit too much like 'alone'.
Malone can also be used on a girl because the only Malone I knew was a girl and the name fit her well enough.
