Personal Impression
My name is Maris Stella. It was my mother's name. She was born in 1931 and I in 1966.
I was told it meant Star of the Ocean. My family are devout Catholics. There is a prayer, Ave Maris Stella.
I was also born under the water sign Pisces. I am very proud of my name and pronounce it Marie+s.

I am absolutely in love with this name and its meaning! I saw a previous comment saying that it would be cool to name twins Maris and Stella. I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant with my 2nd daughter and her name is Maris. My older daughter's name is Stella. We are Catholic and I think it's a really nice way to pay tribute to the Virgin Mary.

My name is Maris! I absolutely love it. My mother named me after Niles' ex-wife on the TV show, Frasier. It fits me well.

Maris is an element appearing in multiple Celtic languages, meaning "great", and is used as a suffix in the name Onomaris, according to Celtic culture: a historical encyclopedia. Vol. 1-, Volume 2 edited by John T. Koch, p.1396.

My name is Maris and I'm only 18 years old. Growing up I always hated having to explain why I had such a different name that no one ever really hears of, but now that I'm older I enjoy having a unique name. I like the fact that I am one of a kind. I like that every other person I know has met someone with the same name as them, but me, I have never met anyone with the first name Maris. I find it beautiful.

Reading a recent comment I thought I would write to say it is my middle name, given to me 62 years ago when I was born so it is an old fashioned name but as you say, quite hard to find someone with it! I did not always like it when I was young, thought it harsh sounding, but now I love it!

I love the name. I named my daughter Maris in 1999. I've never met another person named Maris, but I've heard that Susan Rice, who is a cabinet member of Barack Obama, has a daughter named Maris.

Very beautiful and unique. The sea meaning is lovely. X.

My daughter, 21, is named Maris, which is a family name for us. It's Latin meaning 'of the sea' was very appropriate for her since she was born under water. I love that this beautiful name is underused, and not heard often. Since the birth of my daughter two different friends have named their daughters Maris.
My daughter's name rhymes with Paris, not MAR-is/us.

I think the name Stella would be a good twin combination with Maris.

I was told marissa meant "of the sea", but on here it says its just a combination of Maria and Louisa. I get called Maris sometimes, since my name is marissa. But I never knew it was a real name! :)

It is such a beautiful, fancy name. Would be wonderful on the daughter of a marine biologist.

I've just came across this name! I didn't even know it before! But it's beautiful! It's my favourite now! It just has such a ... "magical" sound. Love it! This will be the name of my future daughter... in 10 years ;D

Maris is a very nice name for a girl. I just love it.

I hadn't heard of this name until a few weeks ago and I immediately fell in love with it. It's not the kind of name you give to just anybody, in my opinion. It's reserved for women of class, and I intend to give this to one of my daughters as a middle name.

I think this is a wonderful name. I don't know why it isn't used more often. It is so beautiful.

A lovely, underused name.

I love the meaning of this name! It is alro really pretty and underused, which I find a plus. I might use this as a combination of my two grandmothers' names: Margaret and Doris. All around a great name, in my opinion.

I'm fairly certain Maris has a connection to the god Mars, which, of course, a planet is also named after.
Yubi Shines  6/11/2007
Maris hasn't any connection with the god Mars. In Latin, Maris is the genitive for of mare (sea), and the genitive form of Mars is Martis (hence the adjective "martial"): there is a -t- in the radical of the god's name.

This is such a beautiful name, I am surprised it is so underused.

Maris hasn't appeared at all on the top 1000 list since the 1880's to today.

On the popular sitcom “Frasier” (1993-2004), Maris Crane was the name of Niles’ disliked wife (and later, ex-wife). She never appeared or was heard onscreen.

Maris is such a beautiful elegant name. I also love the name Amaris, I have read that the name Maris could come from Amaris which is Hebrew meaning promised by God.

This is a really beautiful name for a girl, one she could grow up with.

I am quite surprised that this is the first and only comment for Maris. I think it is a beautiful, old fashioned name; yet it is not ostentatious or dated. I generally love all names related to the sea, and I feel Maris is one of the best - it embodies the ocean's subtle beauty, power, and mystery.
This was almost my name; though my parents ultimately decided on Kendall. I would have liked to be named Maris - it's such a strong and unique name. It's perfect for anyone wanting an interesting name for a baby girl.
