I am quite surprised that this is the first and only comment for Maris. I think it is a beautiful, old fashioned name; yet it is not ostentatious or dated. I generally love all names related to the sea, and I feel Maris is one of the best - it embodies the ocean's subtle beauty, power, and mystery.

Maris hasn't any connection with the god Mars. In Latin, Maris is the genitive for of mare (sea), and the genitive form of Mars is Martis (hence the adjective "martial"): there is a -t- in the radical of the god's name.-- Marie-Amelie 5/24/2008
