I have been under the impression that Marisol meant Sunflower. But look up Girasol and Tornasol.

As someone mentioned above, Marisol is often a contraction or nickname for Maria de la Soledad. The Name Day for girls named after Nuestra Senora de la Soledad (Our Lady of Solitude) is Holy Saturday (the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday). The "solitude" of Mary refers to the time when her son Jesus was in the tomb, between his crucifixion and resurrection. [noted -ed]

Combination of Mar + i + Sol - means 'sea and sun' in Catalan. Not actually a combination of maria and sol - that's more likely to be a name like 'Maria-Soledad'.
