Meaning & History

Supposedly a Neapolitan form of Marisa - perhaps a double diminutive in origin. By coincidence, it may also mean "small braid (of hair)" in Neapolitan.

This name was popularized by a 1954 song called 'Maruzzella' by Italian musician Renato Carosone (1920-2001), who was born in Naples.
