This was used by Harper Lee in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Maudie Atkinson was like a female version of Atticus Finch, the main character of the novel.
Not the best, but it's a lot better than the overused nickname Maddie.

My grandmother's name was Maud and if ever I have another little girl I'll be calling her Maudie! It's such a strong but wholesome name, just like the lady I remember. Love it!
