Mayu is the yandere Vocaloid. A "yandere" is a character who appears sweet and innocent, then turns violent and insane when someone messes with the person she loves. Mayu is often seen holding an axe or a stuffed bunny named Usano Mimi.

The pronunciation given ("mah-yoo") is more the way bad American voice-over artists would say the name (as well as adding "saaahn" for -san)! The Japanese pronounce MAYU "MY-yoo" (and -san "sann").
