Megan has a lot of meanings in many cultures
Megha is a name for god and goddess in Hinduism
It means great in Greek as well as strong and powerful
It also means child of light In Irish the pronunciation is may-gin which is prettier.
Also means 'strong' in Welsh.
I'm Welsh (born and raised in Wales and can speak Welsh) and I can confirm that Megan is the correct and true spelling of this Welsh name. Our alphabet is phonetic and none of these other stupid spellings (e.g. Meaghan) would make any bloody sense. The other spellings do seem very 'Americanized' only to be ignorantly labelled as Welsh/Irish etc. just because of the way they look. Research the phonics of celtic languages.GO MEGAN!
After serious, volume bending research on a completely different topic, I stumbled upon something interesting for those who want to research the name "Megan".
I see on this site that it is listed as a pet name for "Margaret". Actually, "Meg" is the pet name for "Margaret", meaning "a pearl" and is NOT short for "Megan". The name "Megan" itself bears the meaning of "strong and able". I have never found any other translation. I will add however, to all you language folks - that "Megan" most likely stems from the word (whether Celtic or Gaelic - sorry it's late) "MAGAN" which literally translates to the masculine word "STRONG".
Megan is Welsh as a nickname for the name Margaret. Since there was not a wide variety of names in ancient times like there is now they had to come up with a lot of different nicknames to distinguish people. Megan was one of them for Margaret. Megan is the most original and correct spelling. Some people think that adding the A or the H (Meghan/Meaghan, etc.) is the Welsh or Irish spelling when that is highly incorrect. It may look more Irish/Welsh but it isn't. This can be proved by the fact that in correct Gaelic pronunciation 'gh' would not be pronounced like the normal English gutteral G. 'gh' is prn like 'ch' with a K sound but more gutteral so it is sort of inbetween the English G and the English K sound. 'gh' can also be pronounced like 'y', the difference matters on whether it is short or long.Megan is my name and I like it ok but wish I had something more unique. I was born in 1985 when it was in the top 10 of baby names for girls and I have lived a life of being Megan (last initial). Thus I'm dedicated to giving my own children legitimate but unique names.
In Gaelic I believe this name is the word for Pearl, one that is highly regarded for beauty or value.
