It sounds too much like a surname, no offense...
Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812), was a German Jewish banker and the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty.
Meyer Lansky was a Jewish Mobster who had strong ties to the Sicilian Mafia, and whom the Godfather II character Hyman Roth is based on.
People should note that the surname Meyer is very different from the given name Meyer, and that the given name contains strong Jewish connotations (being a name almost exclusively given to children in Yiddish communities), unlike the surname.
There is a character named Meyer Wolfsheim in the novel The Great Gatsby. He's a Jewish gangster rumored to have fixed the World Series, and is in fact based on real-life gangster Arnold Rothstein who was responsible for the Black Sox Scandal of the 1919 World Series.
Let's not even get into Stephenie Meyer, author of the immensely popular Twilight series.
I can't imagine this as a first name.
Pronounced meh-yur.
Meyer is the Yiddish form of Meir. [noted -ed]
