It isn't conclusive that the name derives from Miriam. Some derive it from the popular root of "mir". Also there is a church term "mirjanin/mirjanka" which means lit. "a person of the world", ie non-clergy (as opposed to "duhovnik", those of the spirit, the clergy) and it could derive from there. [noted -ed]
