Meaning & History

From 瑞穂/水穂 (mizuho), referring to fresh, lush ears of rice, used as part of the name 瑞穂国 (Mizuho-no-kuni), one of the classical names for Japan which means something like "the Land of Abundant Rice."
Other kanji can be used, such as 泉, normally read as izumi meaning "spring, fountain," or 夢, normally yume meaning "dream," for the first one, and 歩 meaning "step" or 帆 meaning "sail" for the second one.

Bearers of this name include poet Mizuho Ōta (太田 水穂), born Teiichi Ōta (太田 貞一) (1876-1955), actor and voice actor Mizuho Suzuki (鈴木 瑞穂) (1927-) and (female) association footballer Mizuho Sakaguchi (阪口 夢穂) (1987-).
