Meaning & History

From the hypocorism Mo-Ninne or Moinnine which meant "my ninne"; ninne was the first word this saint spoke. Saint Moinnine or Moninna (c.432-518) of Killeavy in County Armagh, Ireland was supposedly baptised and confirmed by Saint Patrick. She built a convent at Killeavy at the foot of Slieve Gullion and was buried under a granite slab in the churchyard. There is a holy well dedicated to her further up on the slopes of Slieve Gullion.
