The "mor" appears in many languages. "Morty" could easily be the Italian "morte" or "morti" ("died") transliterated into English. "Mor" ('great, big' in Gaelic; 'sea' in Welsh; 'dark, black' in Sindarin; and 'death' in Latin/Italian) with the suffix -ty.
