The character for "nao" means more than just obedient, it also carries the idea of being straight and honest. There's another "nao" kanji that means "noble".

People need to stop trying to apply their own culture to Japanese names. Aiko (love + child) doesn't mean "love child" as in "child born out of wedlock". This term doesn't exist in many non-English speaking countries. It simply means "love child" as in "beloved/loving child". Naoko means "straight child" as in "straight, honest child". Maybe the word "honest" should be added to the description as it appears as such in the dictionary.
