Nathan Hale was a captain in the American Revolution. He was sent as a spy to find valuable information behind the English lines (to help George Washington), but was caught and hung at around 21 years old. His dying speech and confession was, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
My brother's name is Nathan and everyone calls him Nate. I really like the name, I don't see it much. I've only met one other Nathan in my entire life.
Nathan Lane is a bearer of this name. He is a funny actor with a classic voice. He is a real chief actor. Probably one of the best in hollywood.

I love the name Nathan. It reminds of a man who is kind, gentle and rugged and handsome. It is popular but not overly so, I can't think of any that have been in my son's classrooms.

Nathan is a great name. If I named my son this I would definitely call him Nate. You don't hear it that often.

I agree, "Nate" is such a dignified nickname and not heard too often. Yet it's still recognizable! Perfect balance.
I love the name Nathan, but don't like Nate. Almost everyone I know named Nathan is called Nate, and most of them are very anoying. It is way too common in my opinion, but I love Nathan.
My younger brother's name is Nathan as well. I think it is a perfect balance of civilization yet strong masculinity. The prophet Nathan in the Old Testament was a man of great faith in God and courage to stand up to King David when he sinned. I hope and pray that my brother becomes a man of great faith and courage.
I know some more uses of Nathan: *Nathan Exploson, the singer for the band Dethklok on the TV show Metalocalpyse. *Nathan Arizona and his kidnapped son, Nathan Jr. from "Raising Arizona"
On a man (not a child, thank you) this name is the perfect blend of brains and sexy. This guy is the star football player who gets straight A's in High school. Grows up to be a Lawyer, Doctor, CEO but drives his motorcycle to work. This name is so freakin hot!

The Hebrew pronunciation of the name Nathan is Nat-an, or just leave out the "h" in the name.

I don't necessarily know where this came from, but in a family origin scroll, that supposedly dates back 600 years, the name Nathan means profit, or at least the Middle-Eastern/Hebrew form of Nathan. Now the English could have reformed and misshapen the word anyway they'd like, so the origin of the name could have been reformed by different cultures, as many are. Have A Nice Day. ^^)

Nathan is also a Tamil name, meaning "son of God".
I think this is a perfect name for a boy. Not too delicate, not too rough. Nathan could be anything from an all-star athlete to a corporate millionare. Highly recommended.
I happen to be named "Nathan". My name originally was "Nanthan", but that was Chinglish and I got it changed in high school after becoming a US citizen. My impression of the name, given my interests (aviation, commerce, and military matters) is that the name would do well for someone who leads a large group of people, such as airline pilots and managers and ATC and AAE (airport executives), Chief Executive Officers of multinational and transnational (and soon transplanetary) corporations, and for military commanders of Colonel rank and above. In fact, that is one of my career desires - to join the military after I graduate from college and work for promotion to General. When I do that I guess I will add more value to this name. The reason not a lot of people have the name is because having the name and knowing what it means usually results in selfless giving (such as being a soldier) and dying young. It should never be given to any objects of affection.
I have Nathan as a middle name and hated it for years. I always questioned my parents as to why they chose it, and the answer was "as an option in case you didn't like your first name."
Now, I've never liked my first name either, especially as it's becoming very common and says very little about me. But when people hear my middle name it always draws positive comments, to the extent that I'm considering taking my parent's option and just introducing myself as Nathan, or Nate, from now on.
I really like this name. It sounds masculine, yet modern and it just would be cute on a little boy, but isn't a name you could grow out of. I would definitely consider naming my son Nathan, or Nathanael "Nathan".

A very strong, masculine name and I think it ages well too. I recently had a son and named him Nathan and so far have only had good comments on it.
Wow, I love this name and have ever since I was a kid. I am so sad that it has spiked in popularity since 1980, so it won't be as unique 20 years from now. Oh well.
I don't like "Nate" as a nickname, I would just use the full Nathan. Someone mentioned Nathan as a nickname for Jonathan. That's a neat idea! I like it.
Nathan is one of the main characters in British speculative fiction series 'Misfits', about a group of young offenders who gain superpowers.
There's also the eponymous Nathan in the short British comedy series, 'Nathan Barley'.
Because of these two characters I always associate the name with someone who doesn't take life seriously and is a bit of an irritating attention seeker... but in an oddly charming way.

The prophet Nathan was a wise counselor to King David in the Old Testament. Ref: Chapter 12 in the Second book of Samuel.

"Why it's good ol' reliable Nathan... Nathan, Nathan, Nathan Detroit!" (from GUYS AND DOLLS)

Nathan Darmody is the guitarist of the band Allstar Weekend.
I agree with Nathan. Zhang's opinion above. One of the characters that I have created for my books bears this name, and though it is a cool, handsome, intelligent and slightly dark name, he is the object of no one's affections. He is also a soldier, and dies young. I love this name, but I wouldn't name my son this because there are names I love even more.
