Related name: Jonathan.
The prophet Nathan was a wise counselor to King David in the Old Testament. Ref: Chapter 12 in the Second book of Samuel.
Nathan means "gave", not "giver" (that would be "Noten"). The implication is "God gave" (like the name "Yonathan"). [noted -ed]
My younger brother uses Nathan as a nickname for Jonathan. I've never heard of anyone else doing this, it's a bit unusual.
I don't necessarily know where this came from, but in a family origin scroll, that supposedly dates back 600 years, the name Nathan means profit, or at least the Middle-Eastern/Hebrew form of Nathan. Now the English could have reformed and misshapen the word anyway they'd like, so the origin of the name could have been reformed by different cultures, as many are. Have A Nice Day. ^^)
