It seems strange to me that Nico would be considered a girls' name, let alone predominantly feminine. It ends with an 'O' which is traditionally masculine. A beautiful name for a boy. A somewhat silly name for a girl.

I have a male cousin named 'Federico' and we've always called him 'Nico'. His name is NOT Nicolas. To me, this name is totally masculine.
Singer/model/actress Nico was just NICO. Her birth name was Christa Paeffgen (I don't know how to do Umlauts, so I use the internal e). Once you tack a last name onto it, Nico does seem to become more masculine.
Although Nico was a strikingly beautiful woman in her youth (before drugs and hard living took their toll), her deep Dietrich-like singing voice, her decidedly unfrilly manner of dress, gesture and speech made for a somewhat androgynous impression. Which, I think, she enjoyed.
She was "named after" a man, the former lover of one of her early photographers. However, it's been suggested that her name echoes more feminine sounding names like Coco (as in Chanel) and that was part of the appeal.
Contemporary singer Neko Case uses a variant (and therefore perhaps more feminine?) spelling.
Um, no. Sounds like something someone would name their Siberian husky. I don't know if I'd be able to take this name seriously on an adult, although it might be a cool nickname for Nicholas/Nicolas.
