Curiously, the male form, Nirmal, is pronounced NEER-mahl. Stress is on the first syllable, but the vowel of the second syllable is a long aah, not the short uh of Nirmala. I have asked Indians why this is, but no one has been able to provide me with an answer.
Sanskrit nir, pronounced neer means "without." Mala, pronounced muhluh means "blemish or imperfection." Thus, in Sanskrit the meaning is "without blemish."The correct pronunciation is NEER-muh-luh with the stress on the first syllable, NOT the second syllable. I learned the correct pronunciation of sife's name shortly after we met nearly 50 years ago.
