Odile is the black swan in Swan Lake. The white swan is her sister Odette.

Odile is not Odette's sister. Where did that come from?

I think if people can overlook the "Swan Lake" reference it makes a really nice name. One of my good friends' name is Odile.

Odile (pronounced Oh-Dee-Leh) is the heroine---or anti-heroine, if you will---of Jean-Luc Godard's famous movie "Band A Part".

I actually think Odile's a pretty cool name. I'm using it for one of my stories and one of my fictional children!

The name was used in the ballet "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky. She played as the secondary antagonist, who is disguised as Odette in the third act to seduce the prince.

This is actually a unisex name in French, even though the name is most commonly found on females.

In the case of male bearers, Odile is the French form of Odilo.

An example of a male bearer is the Belgian road racing cyclist Odiel Defraeye (1888-1965), who was often known as Odile Defraye.
