The Parsii (or Parsi) were a tribe located in Gaul (France) per Julius Caesar's Gallic War Commentaries, and also according to Ptolemy (an astronomer, geographer in Alexandria, Egypt, (100CE to 177CE) were also located in Roman Britain. Some scholars have suggested that their name comes from a type of hollowed out boat they used at that time. However, long before these came into being, a young dandy named Paris of the Trojan War (circa 1200BC) was on the scene. He was a belated and ultimately destructive addition to the Trojan royal family. The name was an alternative name to Alexander, as Bill is to William or Harry is to Henry. The name is probably Luwian, the language of the Trojans of that period. There can be 2 exact names with different histories. Albania and Albania in the Caucasus, now referred to Caucasian, Albania are countries with the same name but different etymologies. The Caucasian Albania from the Roman Latin meaning mountains, and the Balkan country today is named from a tribe called the Albani who lived in the Balkans circa 150AD. However, both share a common root, alb, which is an Indo-European word meaning mountainous, hilly, possibly from the term 'alp'.I don't know why people of either sex would be embarrassed by their name being the same as Paris Hilton. She is not an everyday character and fades out of public view more each year. Think of how much you would hate your name if it were-----Donald or Hillary!
My French teacher told me that a Parisii was not a tribe, but actually a type of boat made from a hollowed out log which the early tribes of people used around the area that became Paris. The city was later named for that type of boat when the Romans invaded.
