Polyhymnia, was the Muse of sacred poetry, sacred hymns and eloquence. She is also sometimes credited as being the Muse of geometry and meditation. Her name means “the one of many hymns". She is usually depicted as being very serious, in meditation and pensive while holding a finger to her mouth and wearing a long cloak.
Poor little girl with this name. She'll be the last person to learn to spell her name. But that's not why I don't like it. It just sounds like some Latin something, or like somebody tried to combine Polly with Hymn and wasn't succesful.
If it sounds like "a Latin something or other," it's because it is. And if it sounds like someone tried to combine the words poly and hymn, it's because they did. Trace the name to its roots, and there they are.
Pronounced Polly-him-nee-a.
The real name of Poly O'Keefe, from Dragons in the Water and A House Like a Lotus by Madeleine L'Engle.
