I think that it behooves people to realize that the true origin of this name is pre-Renaissance Germanic, hence the original spelling of RALF, an abbreviation of RADULF. This would make the spelling with "ph", which is post-Renaissance, the variant. The name has a simple yet purposeful sound to it; as well as having an interesting root meaning. As for that... ref.
