Derived from Sanskrit रेणुका (rēṇukā), which refers to a particular medicinal substance said to be of greyish colour, fragrant but bitter, and slightly pungent in taste. This is the name of a Hindu goddess revered in Southern India. In the epic 'Mahabharata', she is the wife of Jamadagni and mother of Parasurama (the sixth avatar of Vishnu).
