Meaning & History

Roman cognomen which was derived from Rogatus. This name was borne by a Roman senator who, under the influence of the philosopher Plotinus (3rd century AD), resigned from his job and abandoned all of his wealth in order to live a simple lifestyle as a philosopher.

This was also the name of several martyrs and saints, three of whom were part of the group of 49 Christians that were martyred in the town of Abitinae (located in what is now northern Tunisia) in 304 AD.
