I plan to use this someday, I adore it. I have a great great aunt named Ruby, called Bea (bee), and she is the nicest lady in the world. I love the name!
The name Ruby has been used in a number of songs. Some include "Ruby Tuesday" by The Rolling Stones, "Ruby Mae" by Indigo Swing, "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" by Kenny Rogers, "Ruby Brown" by Deana Carter, "Ruby So-Ho" by Rancid, "Ruby's Arms" by Tom Waits, and "Ruby Adeline" by Minnie Driver.
Ruby Bridges is a neat girl to learn about. I enjoyed the movie. Ruby fits the sweet little girl very well.

Not my cup of tea, at all! Sounds like it belongs to a fat old lady! Sorry.

Such a sweet name, very natural and makes you smile.

My great grandmother (my maternal grandfather's mother) bore this name, although she was not especially fond of her name: "Ruby Lee White". I'm ambivalent about the name, but I like it because it's from a family member and that it's unique without being strange and doesn't sound ditzy.
I have always known Ruby for a girl's name. It just doesn't really sound right masculine. Sorry.

Toby Mcguire (the guy who plays Spiderman) named his first daughter Ruby Sweetheart. (Yes, her middle name is Sweetheart) This is because his wife's grandmother or aunt, I think, called her 'Sweetheart', and so they made a tribute to that person. I think it sounds so adorable!
Quite often this name is still thought of as an old lady's name, but in 2006 the name shot up to no.4 in the top 10 in England and Wales. A lot of little Rubys born that year were named after the teen tearaway and gangster's daughter Ruby Allen in the British soap EastEnders.
Ruby Thewes is the name of the incredible character in "Cold Mountain" (the book as well as the film). Also, it's the name of one of the members of Jupiter's clan in the original "The Hills Have Eyes". I haven't seen the remake so I can't say about that, but in the original at least, Ruby is truly the gym of the family because she is so humane and kind. One of my favorite characters.
Ruby Mae is a beautiful name I always loved the name Ruby and it certainly don't bring a picture of a fat lady. Ruby is the name of the main character of my story In The Eyes Of Ruby.

Ruby is a shade of red and it's a beautiful color.
I'm surprised at its trendiness, consider it a little backwoods trashy and think it makes a better nickname for the masculine name Ruben/Reuben.

I agree! It makes a much better pet form for Reuben. It's a little strange for a girl in my opinion. Sure, I can see it on a girl, but I really don't like it for one.
Ruby is a character from Guardians of Ga'Hoole. She is a short-eared owl (it's an owl story) and is in the Chaw of Chaws, an important group in the story.
Rubies may look nice, but the word itself isn't very pretty at all, and the name makes me picture a fat middle aged woman with horrible 80s-style reddish brown hair, too much eye make-up, red lipstick, and really glitzy and kitschy clothes.
A hooker with a heart of gold? It's ok. Ridiculously overused in certain areas.

Ruby - short, sweet, and simple. What more could you ask for?
-- Anonymous User 10/31/2008
Generally seen as down market in the UK by virtue of it's excessive use. In some parts of the US it's still considered toothless hillbilly along with Pearl. It's nothing to write home about and I've always found rubies gaudy.

A big meh. I don't think there's a more expected girls name in England right now. It had some vibe once, now it's just meh.

I have always loved this name. Even though it is very high in popularity for my tastes, I am considering Ruby for my next daughter. It is simple, classic, solid, and feminine.
A classic scullery maid's name turned hipsterish for the 2000's. I suppose there is nothing wrong with that but for those who find it stylish and classic it was more an 'aspirational' name for poor working class Victorians than anything else at the turn of the century. You wouldn't have found it much amongst the 'snooty' rich.
Irrespective of that, I don't like it.

This was my my maternal great-grandmother's name. Her name was Ruby Lee, which was apparently a fairly popular combination when she was born. I think the name is sweet and pretty and brings to mind someone who is generous and kind but also strong and determined.
Considering MY name is Ruby, I don't exactly get the impression that the name is fitting for a fat old lady with too much lipstick! Though, I don't think it is possible to properly judge a name unless you personally know someone with that name.
I don't know where people get the impressions of old-fashioned or fat middle aged women from. To me Ruby reminds me of a cheerful, independent, young girl or woman. It also sounds quite pretty.
Really pretty but getting so over-used, same as Lily.

I loved (and still love) jewel names when I was a kid, but this was my absolute favorite. I loved the way it sounded, and I thought the jewel itself was beautiful. I used to draw a kind of series when I was a kid, and one of the characters was named Ruby. :)
I really like this name; it's so versatile and usable in general. It would suit anybody of any age or personality this name also has the fairly rare attribute of being able to suit a baby or young girl, i.e. to sound girly, young and fresh, but also as the child grows older, to morph into a more responsible, respectable name. I believe that this quality is rare in a name, as more often than not, names can sound either too young or too old, depending on the person's age, but the name Ruby fits all ages perfectly. :)
Ruby is my great grandmother's name on my dad's side. If we have another daughter, Ruby is one of my top choices for her. I used to think the name was nice, but it just keeps growing on me more and more. I usually like longer names with nicknames, but Ruby is graceful, sweet and rich without needing to be long. It sounds lovely with multiple different middle names too - bonus!
A hideous name. Crazy cat-lady... a woman who collects owl statues and dolls-- that's a lot of creep.
Choose a name with class, elegance. A name that will aid your child later in life. A doctor? Lawyer? Successful? No. Even if it is achieved... the name holds back.
As much as I hate this: Rubena is Esperanto for "Like A Ruby," if you must... gag.
Where are these ghastly nature name trends coming from!? Yes, rubies are a stone... ergo, "nature." It is like naming a child "Spring."

I really like this; it's so beautiful! Ruby Marie is a great combo!
A very pretty meaning, but the name itself doesn't sound very good; perhaps it's the final "bee" sound that takes away the appeal. I can't picture it on anyone who doesn't have reddish hair, and it sounds rather immature, as well.
We are blessed to be having a baby very soon. Her middle name will be Ruby for my paternal great-grandma. I never had the chance to meet her but the stories of her give me a very good impression. We really considered using Ruby as her first name because we like it so!

It reminds me of a cute little girl with blonde curly hair.

Ruby Catherine Stevens was the birth name of iconic American actress Barbara Stanwyck.

I love it but it is so common in Australia, second to Lily.
I used to love this name, and when I was pregnant with my son it was a name I considered for him before I knew he was a him. Then one day I met a Ruby in real life and she is a wholly unpleasant person with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Don't you hate when that happens?
I always thought about one day giving Ruby for my daughter's first or middle name. I think it's pretty yet simple. I don't know why some say that it's overused because I have NEVER met a Ruby. My grandpa loved the gem and so it's dear to me.
I first heard this name in a British book. The name has stuck with me ever since. Ruby is a gem, a classic name and very feminine without sounding bratty or snobbish. I would definitely name a girl this.
There's a song called "Ruby, don't take your love to town" by The Killers.

This name is in no way part of a trend, to the person who said it was part of a "nature trend"... The name Ruby has been used for centuries, and in fact was a lot more popular about 100 years ago than it is now. It's plenty professional, especially since if you named your daughter Ruby now shed probably be in competition for a job with a bunch of jaydens, kaydens, kaylees and kylies. This name certainly does have history and is not at all trendy, despite it rising in popularity. There have been tens of thousands of women named Ruby and I'm sure plenty of them have been successful. If you want to bash a name, go bash one that deserves it. Anyways... I think this name is adorable, id say by all means use it if you like it. Although it is becoming increasingly popular in Australia ad the UK.
