Comments (Meaning / History Only)

Rui comes from Ruh, an Arabic word meaning soul, and from Uhi, an Visigoth word meaning stronger and goodly.
When I lived in Portugal (in the '80s) I had a Portuguese first-names book. It mentioned Rui with the meaning "Prince". I am of course not sure if this is correct.
Yes, I also know that version. But it is said it can also mean river, because in Portuguese we say "Rio", perphaps the word was chaged into "rui".
